A survey conducted by real estate website Zillow and pet care service Rover found that pet owners have moved or are considering a move to these 15 dog-friendly cities:
- Denver, CO
- Orlando, FL
- Anaheim, CA
- Charlotte, NC
- Birmingham, AL
- Atlanta, GA
- Boston, MA
- Glendale, AZ
- New Orleans, LA
- Tampa, FL
- Fayetteville, NC
- Fort Worth, TX
- Miami, FL
- Nashville, TN
- Saint Petersburg, FL
The results are based on a poll taken by 1,000 U.S. dog owners via Pollfish in April 2021.
What data was used to determine the results
In addition to the individuals polled, Zillow focused on cities where home and rental listings included dog-friendly features like fenced-in yards and close proximity to parks. They found that homes that included these features sold five days faster than homes that didn’t.
Zillow wrote that only cities with a population of 200,000 or greater, according to 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimates, were considered.
Rover used their resources to look into how many new dog accounts were created in those U.S. cities.
Ultimately, the survey found:
24% of dog owners in the U.S. have moved into a new home since March 2020, and 62% would consider moving to a new home to better accommodate their dog.
The most dog-friendly cities have fenced yards
It’s no suprise that fenced yards are highly desired by dog parents — millenial dog parents, in particular.
In 2017, a study conducted by Harris Poll found that “33% of millennial home buyers’ decision to buy a home was driven chiefly by their dog.”
