Rapid eating can be risky for our furry friends. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These days, most pet parents are aware of the health risks associated with rapid eating. Sadly, it\u2019s all-to-common for dogs that eat too fast to end up at their veterinarian\u2019s office. This is usually due to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.acvs.org\/small-animal\/gastric-dilatation-volvulus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gastric&nbsp;dilatation-volvulus<\/a>&nbsp;(GDV) \u2014 more commonly known as bloat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a lot more severe than typical indigestion. Bloat happens when speedy gulping and eating causes excessive amounts of fluid, food, and air to fill the dog\u2019s stomach, which results in the stomach blowing up like a balloon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, the stomach can become so distended that the stomach twists, trapping gas build up inside and cutting off blood flow to their organs. When this happens, a dog can quickly go into shock and die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Symptoms of bloat include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li>pacing and restlessness<\/li><li>pain in the abdomen area<\/li><li>swollen stomach\/abdominal wall<\/li><li>drooling<\/li><li>excessive panting<\/li><li>exhaustion<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since this is such a scary and life-threatening condition, it\u2019s important for dog owners to learn how to prevent dog bloat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Risk Factors for GDV<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/lifestyle.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16216\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteofcaninebiology.org\/bloat-purdue-study.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">study found<\/a>&nbsp;that deep-chested giant breed and large breed dogs like Akitas, Irish Setters, Irish Wolfhounds, St. Bernards, Boxers, Basset hounds, Great Danes German Shepherds, and Weimaraners are found to have a higher risk of bloat than small dogs with narrow chests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#374768\">Despite an increased awareness of the causes of this serious condition, bloat is still a relatively common occurrence. Even with emergency surgery, 25% \u2013 40% of dogs do not survive GDV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To lower the severity of bloating, many dog parents with large and giant breed dogs opt for&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.friendshiphospital.com\/friendship-news\/dogs-and-bloat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gastropexy surgery<\/a>.
