The good news is that you don’t need a lot of tools to teach the place command to your dog. While there are many reasons you may want to take your dog to a professional dog trainer, you can teach this to your dog yourself. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After your dog has the idea of ‘go to place’ down, introduce the ‘lie down’ command. Your dog might already know this command, and that can work in your favor. Local parks (not dog parks), hiking trails, bike paths, skate parks, near a playground or a school, or along common walking routes you and your dog enjoy are all good places to start. If your dog is making several mistakes, that might mean it’s time to end the training session for the day. He might be ready for a break. To avoid mistakes and your dog getting out of practice, you’ll want to practice the place command regularly until it becomes comfortable and normal for him to engage in place behavior. It gives him structure and he also gets lots of positive reinforcement for that good dog’s behavior! <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
