For example, my friend\u2019s rescue pup naps away, paws hanging off the couch, and then her paws jerk, and she starts <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paddling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the air like she\u2019s chasing frisbees. Why do dogs twitch in their sleep like that?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s cute to watch. But as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pet parents,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> you probably have questions. You might wonder what your dog dreams about. He\u2019s a professor emeritus of psychology at the University of British Columbia the author of&nbsp; &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do Dogs Dream<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Nearly Everything Your Dog Wants You to Know&#8221; (Norton, 2012).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this interview for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/53743-dog-dreams.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Science<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Dr. Coren says both dogs and people have a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep cycle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Like the human <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep cycle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your dog\u2019s sleep relates to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain waves<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and moves through three distinct cycles.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The three stages of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog sleep are<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NREM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Non-Rapid Eye Movement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid Eye Movement<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SWS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short Wave Sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ve probably heard of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REM sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is the stage where you\u2019re most likely to see your dog\u2019s eyes moving under their lids. This is also when your dog is most prone to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle twitches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paddling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> paw movements, whimpers, and, yes, dreams.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to neuropsychological research, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NREM<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sleep is the early stage of sleep. Your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog\u2019s body<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> relaxes, and the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/neuroscience\/non-rapid-eye-movement-sleep\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain waves<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">change. Researchers use a variety of methodologies to study canine sleep, including observation and electroencephalogram (EEG.) The EEG is when the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pooches<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have electrodes attached to their heads to monitor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain activity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Why do dogs twitch in their sleep?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why do dogs twitch in their sleep? It&#8217;s a natural part of the REM stage. The REM cycle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> then is usually the dream cycle, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SWS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the period before waking. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At each stage of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep cycle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain waves<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> change. You can learn to tell what stage of sleep your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pooch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is in by their body language. Does your pup look relaxed? Are your dog\u2019s eyes moving under the lids? Do you hear little yelps and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscle movements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Those indicate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REM sleep,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and your pup is likely deep in dreamland.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REM sleep<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s probably best to not wake your dog up. Let<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/dogs\/how-to-wake-a-sleeping-dog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleeping dogs lie<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">because if you wake them unexpectedly, they could startle. Some dogs are known to nip and be aggressive when they\u2019re woken from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REM sleep,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> so if you need to wake them, it is better to call their name or make other sounds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Mammals Dream<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"900\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/4459_BFBS_Throne_Ilan_Drk_XXL_PDP6.jpg\" alt=\"throne pet bed best friends by sheri\" class=\"wp-image-16851\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the study of dogs and dreams is a newer endeavor, scientists believe that all mammals dream. Scientists studied the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/9453-animals-dream-pictures.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain activity in rats<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as they ran through a series of mazes. When the rats curled up for a snooze, their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain activity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed spikes similar to humans indicating a dream state. It\u2019s the same for dogs.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain stem<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a section called the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pons<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s a small part of the brain that looks a bit like a protrusion in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain stem.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pons<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is something of a communication hub because it allows messages to travel to and from the brain. It controls muscle twitching.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pons<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d is Latin for bridge. It was named by an Italian anatomist who believed the section connecting the right and left hemispheres of the brain looked like a<\/span>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/neuroscientificallychallenged.com\/posts\/know-your-brain-pons\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>bridge<\/b><\/a><b>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not being an anatomist, it looks a little knobby to me, but the name stuck<\/span><b>.&nbsp;<\/b><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>How Much Does a Dog Sleep?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adult dogs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sleep an average of<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sleep.org\/how-much-do-dogs-sleep\/\"><strong>10.8 hours<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a day though it can be as much as 13 hours. Puppies can sleep much more. As you may guess, it\u2019s typical for a dog\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep cycle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to change throughout their lives. For instance, growing puppies and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">senior dogs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tend to sleep the most.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watching your dog sleep, you may notice their muscle twitching and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rapid eye movements<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during dream time. Dog dreams can be short, only lasting a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/thepethandbook.com\/why-dogs-twitch-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">minute<\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or so though it depends on their size. Larger dogs dream for longer, while small dogs may have dreams lasting only thirty seconds.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Sleeping Helps Dogs Learn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/BFBS70595_DONUT-SHAG-VP-DRS-36x36_Angel-6.jpg\" alt=\"why do dogs twitch in their sleep\" class=\"wp-image-16931\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists have long studied the effects of sleep on our memories and learning retention. Giving your brain a rest, aka, sleeping, helps your brain absorb new information and consolidate it in your mind.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out, sleeping benefits your dog\u2019s brain too. A<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.scientificamerican.com\/dog-spies\/memory-wins-when-dogs-sleep\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>Hungarian scientist<\/b><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conducted two studies on dogs and their short-term and long-term memories. The participants were pet dogs, and all knew the Hungarian commands for \u201csit\u201d and \u201clie down\u201d and other commands.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first study hooked electrodes to the dog\u2019s scalps to monitor their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain activity<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they learned something new. In this case, understanding the English words for \u201cSit,\u201d \u201cLie down,\u201d etc. (Don\u2019t worry, the study only included willing pets and their pet parents.)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scientists wanted to see if napping helped the dogs learn these commands easier for the second study. The pups took a three-hour snooze and then were re-tested when they awoke. In general, they performed better after the nap.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, scientists were excited even in the first study because they could see wave patterns in the non-<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">REM sleep cycle<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this non-dream stage, the dog\u2019s brains increased in what\u2019s called \u201cdelta power.\u201d Humans have this \u201cdelta\u201d power too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scientists believe that these brain waves indicate a connection between sleep and learning in the brain. If your dog could tell you his dreams, you might hear about trips to the dog park and snuggling on the couch. Just like we often dream about everyday things, it\u2019s likely the same for your dog.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can only imagine what goes through our pup\u2019s brain. But what if dog twitching seems more serious than a simple dream? What if the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">paddling<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> paws stretch out stiff and your dog is awake? Seizures tend to last longer and be a little more violent than normal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep twitching<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They also tend to happen when your dog is conscious or on the verge of sleeping.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes, your dog will know they\u2019re coming and act nervous before a seizure. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog owners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who&#8217;ve seen seizures know they&#8217;re scary and erratic. Your dog might panic or act nervous or confused leading up to the episode and after.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your dog has repeated seizures, it may be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vcahospitals.com\/know-your-pet\/seizures-general-for-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">epilepsy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
