In fact, the breed is so popular, the American Kennel Club (AKC) says the French bulldog is the #1 pooch in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.akc.org\/expert-advice\/news\/french-bulldog-most-popular-breed-nyc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and many other cities around the country &#8212; including Honolulu.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite their popularity, many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog owners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> don\u2019t realize the special <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health risks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that come with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flat-faced dog breeds like Frenchies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A recent study by the U.K\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetpracticemag.com.au\/study-highlights-breed-loyalty-for-flat-faced-dogs-despite-health-risks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Royal Veterinary College<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(RVC) says the flat-faced breeds tend to suffer from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eye problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heatstroke<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and, yes, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breathing difficulties<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also known as brachycephalic dogs, the term \u201cbrachycephalic\u201d relates to their short noses and the shape of their head, which is flatter than other dog breeds. While adorable, this head shape can, unfortunately, lead to serious long-term <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog owners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> love the flat face dogs despite their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health issues<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and recommend them to others. Certainly, these pooches have winning personalities. Despite their snorting and snoring while sleeping, flat-faced pups tend to be friendly and outgoing when they\u2019re awake.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plus, since many of them are small, they don\u2019t require hours of daily exercise which makes them perfect for city-dwelling dog lovers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, veterinarians do want <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dog owners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be aware of the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsvma.org\/brachycephalic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health risks<\/span> <\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that go along with these breeds. First-time owners, in particular, may not be prepared for the potential vet bills that can accompany these friendly flat-faced pooches. Such <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health problems<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stem from their physical structure, which due to their short noses, means they may not have enough airflow.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study also found they may face a shorter <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">life span<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than their longer muzzled counterparts too.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One known respiratory disease that affects these dogs is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsvma.org\/brachycephalic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BOAS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Like it sounds, it reduces the airways in your dog\u2019s physical structure. Due to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BOAS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">flat-faced dog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could have a thickened <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soft palate<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pinched nostrils, and be at risk of a laryngeal collapse.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your veterinarian can help you assess the potential risks and make recommendations for your individual dog.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Why all the health issues? So if there is a male dog that has the \u201cperfect\u201d flat face and a female that has the \u201cperfect\u201d facial folds, a breeder may breed the two to get a \u201cperfect\u201d brachycephalic face for the breed.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dog breeders track the dog\u2019s pedigree. When you buy a purebred puppy, you know it\u2019s parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on. This can give you a lot of knowledge about their genetic makeup and potential health issues.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, breeders\u2019 goals to achieve the \u201cperfect\u201d appearance lead to a lot of inbreeding. Inbreeding leads to many recessive genes leading to health issues that do not achieve the \u201cideal\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/science-nature\/evolution-petface-180967987\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conformation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this sense, breeding is an animal welfare issue.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take the short snout. It wasn\u2019t always as short. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gizmodo.com\/how-a-century-of-dog-breeding-ruined-these-beautiful-an-1477122149\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hundred years ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, these dogs had longer snouts and, with it, fewer breathing problems. They didn\u2019t snort, snuffle, reverse sneeze, and have sleep apnea. These days, many flat-faced breeds suffer from those breathing problems their whole lives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The health issues brachycephalic breeds face today are a direct result of decades of inbreeding.
