Outward Hound has partnered with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thepeoplesbees.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Peoples Bees<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/barking-news\/outward-hound-caught-a-buzz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urban beekeeping project<\/a> in Denver, Colorado, to guide people of all gardening experience levels in creating and maintaining a garden that provides for pollinators\u2014such as bees, butterflies, and birds\u2014that your pet can safely be around.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not already familiar with gardening, let us begin by saying there are so many reasons to take it up! For starters, it\u2019s good for you. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ellisonchair.tamu.edu\/health-and-well-being-benefits-of-plants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research proves that gardening<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can improve mood, strengthen self-esteem, increase attention span, and provide exercise.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2>Gardening and Mental Health<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/gardening-dogh.jpg\" alt=\"dog and man gardening\" class=\"wp-image-16325\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardening requires us to learn and understand how soil, seeds, plants, climate, and wildlife all cooperate together; therefore building a relationship with the Earth, which connects us with our more primitive needs and boosts our serotonin levels\u2014especially after a long day working indoors.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With gardening comes challenges. Failure through trial and error can teach us humility, but success, on the other hand, can strengthen our self-esteem and sense of self-sufficiency. Successfully growing a <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/dogs\/can-dogs-eat-spaghetti-sauce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tomato plant<\/a> from seed is an achievement anyone can be proud of\u2014especially after the first half dozen seeds failed to flourish.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Modern ways of living have evolved to require multitasking, thereby stretching our attention spans so thin we often feel overwhelmed. Gardening requires patience and focus, which can be incredibly calming for a busy and tired mind.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And lastly, gardening requires physical movement, which is healthy for everyone of just about any mobility. Whether you\u2019re standing, sitting, or kneeling, the work of gardening will activate small muscles in the neck, back, arms, shoulders, fingers, and toes that may otherwise go unused. But be careful\u2014too much of anything can lead to strain and pain, and be sure to <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/dogs\/do-dogs-need-sunscreen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wear sunscreen<\/a> during your time outdoors!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gardening and the Environment<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"899\" height=\"1034\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/bees-e1628518329439.jpg\" alt=\"bee and beehive\" class=\"wp-image-16122\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019ve sold you on gardening, let\u2019s explore what it does for your environment. Many of the seeds we sow produce flowers. Fruits like tomatoes, squash, and strawberries; vegetables like potatoes, broccoli, and lettuces; nuts like almonds and peanuts; legumes like peas and soy; and herbs like mint, basil, and fennel all produce the beautiful and delicate sculptures we call flowers.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flowers are critical to ecosystems as they are responsible for reproducing the crop from which they grow; they produce nectar to attract pollinators, like bees, butterflies, and birds, who enjoy the sweet snack while incidentally spreading the pollen, which flowers also produce, consequently fertilizing the plant and increasing its yummy yield. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Pollinators are essential<\/strong> to this planet. No pollinators mean more than \u2153 less of the fruits, vegetables, nuts, legumes, and herbs we eat and thrive from (not to mention <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/dogs\/is-honey-good-for-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">honey<\/a>!). Gardens are not only great for us but also for the big and small critters around us.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a Pet-Safe Garden Indoors &amp; Outdoors<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dog-garden-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-16323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dog-garden-1.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dog-garden-1-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dog-garden-1-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/dog-garden-1-1024x536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And speaking of critters, canines may build a relationship with our gardens too! Whether your pup is the type to roll in it, gnaw at it, or steer clear of it, pet-friendly gardens are possible\u2014and simple\u2014to keep.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, you should know a few common garden plants that are toxic to dogs, but loved by pollinators. Garden plants toxic to dogs include:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tomatoes, exclusively pollinated by bumble bees<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Onion, garlic, shallots, and leeks<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hops, for you home beer brewers out there<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chamomile, a lovely and fast-growing plant often dried and used for tea<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milkweed, the host plant to the threatened monarch butterfly<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bulb flowers, like daffodils, gladiolas, and tulips<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rhododendron, a flowery shrub<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other beautiful ornamental plants like oleander, begonia, and chrysanthemum<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this list may seem extensive, it should not deter you from growing any of these plants in your garden. Simply being aware of their danger to dogs and taking precautions to prevent contact is plenty safe.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small space and apartment gardeners with pets should be cognizant of plant trimmings and debris tracking into your living space. Keep your area clean and potted plants either up high or tucked away, out of your pet&#8217;s reach. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For heavy fruit-bearing plants like tomatoes, consider using a tomato cage or chicken wire around the perimeter of your pot to prevent the fruit from falling and becoming accessible to your pet.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Outdoor gardening precautions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Backyard gardeners and landowners should first consider their pet\u2019s personality. Dogs who like to roll anywhere, nibble on anything, or dig up everything should not have access to your garden. Consider installing a simple and inexpensive fence using chicken or mesh wire and T-posts, or reclaimed wood pallets, at least 2-feet from your plants to prevent a persistent pooch from reaching their foliage or fruit. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dogs who are easily trainable may just take your word for it; showing them the boundaries of your garden\u2014whether it\u2019s open or <a href=\"https:\/\/bestfriendsbysheri.com\/blogs\/news\/backyard-dog-fence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed off with fencing<\/a>\u2014and teaching them to avoid the area may be enough.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plant Native Plants<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"900\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/planting.jpg\" alt=\"person planting\" class=\"wp-image-16326\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re less interested in growing your own food and more intrigued by planting a pollinator garden, you\u2019ve earned a gold star from The Peoples Bees! Their advice is straightforward and cost-effective: <\/span><b>plant native plants.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native plants are plants that grew on the land before foreign plants were introduced. A great example of introduced (non-native) plants in North America is the familiar dandelion and purple clover, which were brought over from Europe hundreds of years ago. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Native plants are incredibly important to our ecosystems as they are the preferred (and sometimes exclusive) food source and habitat to the insects, birds, and mammals that are also native to the area and keep nature wild.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can learn about native plants in your region by searching online or talking to an expert at your local garden center.
