What are some pet-safe essential oils for a diffuser?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it safe to diffuse pure essential oils around your pets? Can you use them to <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/product\/how-to-create-a-calming-environment-for-your-dog\">help your pets feel calm<\/a> when they&#8217;re anxious?&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you probably know, pure essential oils are much more than air fresheners. They have health benefits and medicinal qualities for both people and pets. Yet, our pets are far more sensitive to smells than humans. Certain essential oils like clove and pennyroyal can be dangerous to your pets.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You&#8217;ve probably also heard warnings like, don&#8217;t use essential oils directly on your pet&#8217;s skin, don&#8217;t let your dog or cat ingest them, and don&#8217;t diffuse citrus oils around cats.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The warnings can be enough to scare you off of essential oil diffusers and aromatherapy completely.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, essential oils do have health benefits, including calming anxious animals. Just think about your dog&#8217;s &#8220;meet and greet&#8221; behavior or how your cat sniffs the new food before tasting.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Jeff says, &#8220;Animals have a substantial part of their nasal passages and brain anatomy dedicated to olfactory (smell) functions, so it makes sense that aromatherapy can be useful in addressing their medical needs.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet, we can overdo it by accident without guidelines, as our pets&#8217; sense of smell is exceptionally stronger than ours.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to pet groomer and educator Malissa Conti-Diene, <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we can smell it, imagine 20x more for that animal. As humans, we get nose blind. We&#8217;ll diffuse for longer and longer amounts of time, and it&#8217;s overwhelming for the animal and can make them sick.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, Malissa says, \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/vetmed.tamu.edu\/news\/pet-talk\/a-cats-five-senses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that cats are much better at differentiating between scents than dogs.\u201d So in a way, their sense of smell is more powerful than your pup\u2019s.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides diffusing essential oils for too long, we can also diffuse ones that can be toxic to our animals because we just don&#8217;t know. Imagine smelling the aroma of freshly baked bread. Such scents can make your mouth water and send your brain skipping through visuals of biting into a slice of delicious bread.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aromatherapy can do more than help your brain visualize happy moments, though. They&#8217;re also used in holistic healing. For instance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5751100\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medical studies show<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> people can use wintergreen for muscle pain, and melaleuca as an antibacterial agent.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These essential oils are plant-based extracts with healing properties. I place tiny needles in acupuncture points associated with the Yin meridians to promote relaxation and ask their human caretakers to use lavender essential oils in the form of diffusers, cloths, or cotton balls soaked with this essential oil.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malissa explains how diffusers work and offers guidelines on using how pet parents can use theirs safely.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In a 24 oz. diffuser, you can run it for about an hour and then shut it off. They&#8217;re ultrasonic, so it makes those water droplets look like steam. Those molecular water droplets have essential oils. They are getting breathed in and land on the animal&#8217;s coat.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;One hour a day is all you need. Especially with felines because they groom themselves so much. One hour in the morning, and if you want to run it again at night before you go to bed, that&#8217;s more than enough.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Dr. Jeff and Malissa recommend diffusing away from areas and out of reach where your pets spend a lot of time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You don&#8217;t want to diffuse essential oils near your pet&#8217;s favorite napping spot, like a <a href=\"https:\/\/bestfriendsbysheri.com\/collections\/shop-dogs\">calming dog bed<\/a>, because they may get too much of a good thing.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using essential oils topically<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/coconut.jpg\" alt=\"coconut oil for dogs\" class=\"wp-image-14880\" srcset=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/coconut.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/coconut-300x157.jpg 300w, https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/coconut-768x402.jpg 768w, https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/coconut-1024x536.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you intend to put the oil on your pet as a topical application instead of diffusing, you&#8217;ll need what&#8217;s called a carrier oil. A carrier oil dilutes the essential oil and protects your pet&#8217;s skin from possible skin irritation. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can use olive oil, avocado oil, <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/health-wellness\/coconut-oil-for-dogs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coconut oil<\/a>, or jojoba oil for dilution. How much to dilute depends on the age and size of your pet. It&#8217;s better to dilute heavily and gauge for a reaction. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Malissa says, &#8220;It&#8217;s just like us when we try a new product. Give the body time to adjust.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also says you can create a blend of essential oils for a particular animal. For example, you can create a blend of a <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/summer\/how-to-prevent-lyme-disease-in-your-dog\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">flea\/tick repellant<\/a> by blending geranium oil, rosemary, lemongrass, and bergamot together with a carrier oil.
