(Be wary if you tend to leave clothes in the basket for a few days instead of folding them right away, they just might end up covered in cat hair and need to be washed again!)<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With ample funny <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iTzaK4l3UJY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cat videos<\/a> of them sitting inside of a square taped on the ground or pouncing into an oversized Amazon box, there can be no doubt that cats love boxes. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, perhaps a more interesting question to ask is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cats love them so much? Let&#8217;s demystify this common cat behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Do Cats Love Boxes?<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/cat-in-box.jpg\" alt=\"cat lounging in a box\" class=\"wp-image-15430\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to a lot of evidence on the internet of cats and boxes, there have also been some official studies investigating this intriguing animal behavior. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few years ago, researchers at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techtimes.com\/articles\/31715\/20150210\/cats-experience-less-stress-when-they-have-access-to-boxes-says-study.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">University of Utrecht<\/a> decided to investigate the possible psychology behind cats\u2019 love for boxes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working with a Dutch shelter for stray animals, they performed an experiment with some of the new shelter cats who had just been brought into the animal shelter. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the study, 10 cats were given a cardboard box to help them as they become acclimated into the new space, while nine others in the control group were not given boxes.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The hypothesis was that if sitting in boxes provides a sense of security for cats, then the group that was given boxes should acclimate easily to their new environment than the control group. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During a 14-day period, the cats in both groups were evaluated using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/7990734_Assessment_of_stress_levels_among_cats_in_four_animal_shelters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kessler and Turner Cat Stress Score<\/a> to determine the stress and emotional level of each cat.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>Study Results<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1200\" height=\"628\" src=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/cat5.jpg\" alt=\"group of kittens gotcha day\" class=\"wp-image-13491\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results were statistically significant. By the end of the 14 days, all 19 cats had settled in and become more comfortable, but the group with boxes adapted more quickly than the control group. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The group given boxes were all doing very well with acclimating to shelter life just three days into the study, while the control group showed a high level of variance and many cats took longer to adjust. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some cats naturally adapted more quickly than others, there is no doubt that the boxes helped to speed the process along.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A cat who is likely to settle in just fine will do so more quickly with the help of a simple box, and a cat who may struggle with the adjustment can greatly benefit from this source of comfort.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study concluded that providing these safe zones helped to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/outwardhound.com\/furtropolis\/cats\/cat-body-language-whats-your-kitty-telling-you\">stress levels<\/a> and made it easier to become comfortable in the new environment.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These small spaces make for a great hideout, and many animals (humans included) are naturally comforted by confined spaces. Overall, the researchers found what they expected to find and their theories were confirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to psychological comfort, there is possibly a physiological benefit as well. That these small enclosed spaces act as great insulators and help them to regulate body temperature.
