Meet Abby, Outward Hound’s Global Logistics Manager. She has a true passion for animals<\/a> and has fostered more than 40 dogs, puppies, cats and kittens! Abby helps our local municipal shelters with important community services. She’s worked at a low-cost vaccine clinic, educated the public on the importance of spay and neutering, and more. When Abby met Annie, a 5-year-old Whippet, she knew that special needs pup had found a special place in her heart.<\/p>\n

Abby’s Story of Rescuing Her Dog, Annie<\/strong><\/h2>\n

“Annie is a 5-year-old Whippet that was brought to Denver Animal Shelter<\/a> in November 2020. A neighbor had noticed a dog in her building that appeared to be starving. She called Denver Animal Protection<\/a> who arrived for the dog’s wellness check. The officer agreed that the dog was in life-threatening condition and took the dog from the owner.<\/p>\n

The veterinary team at the shelter started her on a re-feeding plan<\/a>. A refeeding plan is a diet designed to help malnourished animals gain weight. When the vets examined Annie, they noticed signs of kidney failure, which bloodwork later confirmed. Because kidney failure is irreversible and costly to manage, Annie was facing euthanasia.<\/p>\n

I met Annie while volunteering at the shelter and I knew I wanted to give her a chance, despite her special needs and limited life expectancy. I brought her home a few days later.”<\/p>\n

The concerned neighbor that called Animal Protection saved Annie\u2019s life. This is why it’s so important to remember “See something, say something!” If you suspect animal abuse or neglect, call your local Animal Control agenc. You can also call your local Police Department\u2019s non-emergency number<\/a>. It could lead to rescuing a dog!<\/p>\n

If you or someone you know is struggling to care for their pets, there are community resources that may be available. In Denver, there is an Eviction & Displacement Relief Program.<\/a> It provides pet supplies and boarding for those going through periods of homelessness.<\/p>\n

There are also local Pet Support programs in some communities that provide pet supplies and resources. Reach out to your local animal shelter for more information on resources in your area!”<\/p>\n

Abby stays very busy saving animals and managing global logistics. But when she does have free time, she loves going to Denver Nuggets games with her husband and eating amazing vegan food in Denver.<\/p>\n
